A short, scenic hike along the Caribou River which leads to the base of Caribou Falls, a beautiful 35 foot waterfall. Nice views of the Caribou River gorge before descending to the falls.
Caribou Falls is a true hidden gem located along the Superior Hiking trail on Minnesota's North Shore. To access the falls, begin at the Caribou Falls State Wayside rest, off of Highway 61 just north of Little Marais. The trailhead is marked on the Superior Hiking Trail sign in the parking lot. The 1/2 mile (one way) trail of slight inclines and declines gives way to nice views of the Caribou River and gorge before arriving to a set of wooden stairs leading to the falls. The stairs lead right down to the water, where you will find nice vantage points to photograph the falls.
This is a nice quiet, peaceful hike that was not very populated when we hiked the trail. If you wish, you can ascend back up the stairs and continue further along the Superior Hiking Trail for views of Crystal Creek or head back towards the wayside rest to your car.
