The Old Indian Trails, located near Empire, Michigan, offer a peaceful escape into the quieter southern end of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Made up of two interconnected loops — the Black Arrow Loop and the Green Arrow Loop — this trail system leads through maple-beech forests, low dunes, and eventually out to the stunning shores of Lake Michigan. It’s a scenic and uncrowded option for hikers looking to explore Sleeping Bear’s natural beauty with minimal elevation gain and rewarding lake views.

Trail Overview:

  • Difficulty: Easy to moderate

  • Trail Type: Loop (with shared connector section)

  • Estimated Time: 1.5 to 2 hours

  • Trail Surface: Packed dirt and sand

Highlights:

  • Traverse quiet forested dunes, wildflower meadows, and rolling terrain

  • Both loops end at or near Lake Michigan, offering a tranquil, often secluded beach

  • Great for birdwatching, wildflowers in spring, and colorful foliage in fall

  • Typically uncrowded, even during peak season — ideal for solitude seekers and nature lovers

Parking & Access:

  • Trailhead and small gravel parking lot are located off M-22, approximately 3.5 miles south of Empire

  • The trailhead sign is easy to miss — look for the “Old Indian Trail” sign on the west side of the road

  • No restrooms or water available on site — plan accordingly

Permits & Fees:

  • A Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore entrance pass is required

  • Valid passes include the America the Beautiful pass or park-specific day/weekly passes

Hours:

  • Open year-round from dawn to dusk

  • Accessible in winter for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing

Dog Policy:

  • Dogs are allowed but must be kept on leash

  • Please clean up after your pet and respect wildlife in this sensitive dune environment

Additional Tips:

  • Green Arrow Loop is slightly shorter and may be easier for casual hikers

  • Black Arrow Loop includes more varied terrain and better access to the lake

  • Be prepared for sandy sections near the lake — hiking shoes with good tread recommended

  • Bring bug spray in summer months to ward off mosquitoes and ticks

  • There are no amenities at the lake access point, so pack out all trash and supplies

If you’re looking for a quiet alternative to more popular Sleeping Bear trails like Empire Bluff or Pyramid Point, the Old Indian Trails deliver serene forest walking, lake views, and a peaceful slice of northern Michigan.

Old Indian Trails: Black Arrow and Green Arrow Loops Reviews

Well maintained trail with 2 loop options. Both give option to go out to Lake Michigan beach which requires about a half mile RT of dune hiking. Note that dogs are not allowed on the beach. Majority of the hike is in forest so nice shade but lots if mosquitoes!
