Description

Added by Lisa Zook

The Bass Lake Loop is an approximately 3.5‑mile loop nestled within the Platte Plains trail network of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. It winds gently through a lightly rolling terrain of pine-hardwood forest, passing Bass Lake, Deer Lake, and wetland areas—perfect spots to pause, rest on a bench, and take in the tranquility and wildlife.

Permits & Access

  • A park pass is required for trail use within Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

  • Parking is available at several trailheads:

    • Trail End Rd (gravel lot with vault toilets, maps)

    • Esch Beach area (paved parking, vault toilets)

    • Platte River Campground (paved lot, flush toilets, water access nearby).

Pet Policy & Season Restrictions

  • Dogs are permitted on the Bass Lake Loop from April 1 to November 30.

  • Pets are not allowed December 1 through March 31 for trail use across mainland trails in the park.

  • While on permitted dates, dogs must be on a 6‑foot leash and under immediate control.

Hiking & Biking Info

  • Hiking: The trail is easy to moderate, with gentle hills and mostly flat terrain, ideal for an immersive forest and lakeside stroll.

  • Biking: Bicycles are only permitted on roads and the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail, not on inland loops like Bass Lake Loop.

  • Multi‑use? Mountain biking is not recommended or allowed.

Seasonal Access & Cautions

  • Pets are restricted Dec 1–Mar 31.

  • Key wildlife/hunting seasons, particularly deer rifle season from Nov 15–30, require extra vigilance—wear bright clothing and stay on trails.

  • Trail safety tips:

    • Mosquitoes can be intense—bring repellent.

    • Watch for poison ivy (“leaves of three, leave it be”).

    • Trails may have uneven footing, exposed roots, and sand slide/bluff risks—stay on marked paths.

Why Visit?

  • Peaceful natural setting: Serene forest ambiance with lakeside views—great for quiet reflection or nature photography.

  • Wildlife encounters: Keep an eye out for birds, ripening wintergreen berries in fall, and occasional wildlife near wetlands.

  • Accessible terrain: Suitable for all skill levels—families, casual hikers, and anyone wanting an easy paced loop.

  • Part of a larger trail network: Perfect to combine with Otter Creek Loop (4.6 mi) or the more strenuous Lasso Loop for longer outings.

  • Trail Trekker Challenge: Completing the Bass Lake Loop counts toward the national lakeshore’s Trail Trekker Challenge—a fun year‑long hiking goal.
