Description

Added by Jessica Cho

Take in the wide open sand plain on a peaceful walk through Huckleberry Barrens, a short and easy to follow trail loop in Katama, MA.

The Huckleberry Barrens property is a 17 acre expanse of land in Katama, MA managed by the Sheriff's Meadow Foundation. Though the property is quite vast, the trail loop is only approximately 0.5 miles. Quite conveniently, If you're looking to extend your walk, run or bike, there is an opening halfway through the loop that leads directly onto the bike path along Katama Road heading to South Beach.

The trail is somewhat hidden and is not often crowded. It's the perfect peaceful place to go to clear your head on a short stroll or to take your dog for a walk. The natural habitat of this open landscape showcases barrens of huckleberry shrubs, thickets of post oak, bundles of bayberries, and groves of eastern red cedar. Sweeping oaks above offer the relief of shade on hot, sunny days. Though a short trail, there are plenty of opportunities to stop and take in the beauty of the natural environment or to sit for a moment to rest on one of the wooden benches.

The trail is open from dawn to dusk and welcomes walkers, bikers, horseback riders, and cross country skiers. Note that the trail is not paved and several rocks or roots may stick out. Wear appropriate shoes and watch where you're riding if you are biking. To access the trail, head South on Katama Road, turn left onto Edgartown Bay Road, and look for the Huckleberry Barrens green sign. Parking is limited.
