Description

Added by Chanel Mazzone

The Halibut Point Trail is a scenic ~1.6-mile loop that traverses both the old Babson Farm Quarry and coastal overlooks, offering sweeping Atlantic Ocean views, tide pools, and remnants of 19th-century granite quarrying. On a clear day, you can see as far as Mount Agamenticus in Maine and the Isles of Shoals off New Hampshire.

The site blends geological history (quarry), cultural heritage (WWII fire-control tower turned Visitor Center/museum), and natural splendor — sun-dappled granite cliffs, fragile tidepool ecosystems, wild coastal shrubs.

Access, Permits & Parking

  • No hiking permit needed, just pay a daily parking fee from Memorial Day weekend to early October.
  • Trails are open year-round, from 8 am to sunset, with the Visitor Center and exhibit areas accessible during daytime hours.

Dogs, Biking & Other Restrictions

  • Dogs - Allowed on leash only (carry out waste)
  • Biking / Scooters - Not allowed — bicycles, scooters, and similar devices are prohibited
  • Swimming / Quarry Access - Strictly forbidden — no swimming or entering the filled quarry

Hiking & Trail Details

  • The loop begins at the parking area on Gott Avenue, leading past the Visitor Center and museum (formerly a fire-control tower), encircling the granite quarry, and then continuing to the coastal shoreline viewpoints.
  • It’s characterized as family-friendly, easy terrain, mostly flat with moderate footing, but be mindful of uneven, rocky surfaces and shifting ledges.
