Kayak in the calm waters around Wye Island Natural Resources Management Area
With over 2,400 acres of managed land, Wye Island Natural Resource Management Area is the perfect spot to explore via the water. There is a public boat launch in Wye Landing near the island, put in your boat there and head south a little to connect with the island's coast. To fully circle the island it is about 14 miles, or feel free to head a little ways along the northern or southern edge of the island. Keep a lookout for deer and other animals on the island, as well as large flocks of a variety of birds. As you travel you will notice a lot of neighboring houses have built bird blinds, so keep your eyes peeled (I saw at least one eagle when I went.) About halfway around the island on the western point there is a picnic table and small beach perfect for a packed lunch or break. The island is slightly off the bay, so currents and wind are not too much of a factor.
When finished your boating excursion, feel free to head to the island itself for some hiking!
