Penobscot River Trails is a premier nature preserve and recreational facility nestled along the East Branch of the Penobscot River in Grindstone, Maine. Offering 25 kilometers (approximately 16 miles) of meticulously maintained trails, visitors can immerse themselves in pristine wilderness through activities like hiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. It is a hidden gem!

Hours of Operation:

The trails are open seven days a week, from dawn to dusk, allowing guests to enjoy the natural beauty throughout the year.

Fees and Permits:

Access to Penobscot River Trails is free of charge; no permits are required for general use. Visitors are encouraged to sign in at the Visitor Center upon arrival.

Parking:

Ample parking is available near the Visitor Center, providing convenient access to the trailheads.

Pet Policy:

To protect the local wildlife and ensure a safe environment for all guests, pets are not permitted on the trails.

Visitor Amenities:

Visitor Center: Features a wood-burning stove and heated restrooms, offering a comfortable starting point for your adventure.

Warming Huts: Two warming huts equipped with wood-burning stoves are located along the Riverside Trail, providing cozy rest stops during your journey.

Carriage Trails: Constructed with crusher dust, these trails offer a smooth and comfortable surface for various activities.

Groomed Winter Trails: During winter months, trails are groomed for classic cross-country skiing, with designated areas for skate skiing and backcountry skiing.

Equipment Rentals: The Visitor Center offers rentals for activities such as cross-country skiing, mountain biking, and snowshoeing, operating on a donation basis.

Leave No Trace: As a Leave No Trace facility, visitors are expected to carry out all trash to preserve the natural environment.
