This easy day hike on the Scenic Trail in Point Mugu State Park takes you to an incredible overlook of the Pacific Ocean, Point Mugu, and the Pacific Coast Highway.
The trailhead is located in the day use area of Point Mugu State Park. Park in the day use area parking lot. There is a parking fee of $12/day or $3/hr.
From the parking lot, walk through the campground until you reach the old service road. After passing through the gate, turn left at the sign for the Scenic Trail. Gradually ascend for approximately 0.7 miles until you reach the top of the Scenic Trail Overlook. You’ll have incredible ocean views with the Pacific Coast High below and Point Mugu to the north.
Make sure to explore the various spur trails at the top for different vantage points. You can also extend your hike by hiking the 0.4 mile ridge trail to the left. (Note: as of May 2017, the ridge trail is closed for restoration. Please respect park rules and avoid this area until reopened.)
To the right, the trail connects to the Overlook Trail and to the Sycamore Canyon Fire Road Trail. If you desire a longer hike and want to explore more of the park, these trails can be used to loop back to the park entrance. Otherwise, simply retrace your steps back down the Scenic Trail.
