The Rough Trail to Hanson’s Point is a challenging but rewarding hike in Kentucky’s Red River Gorge, offering a mix of rugged terrain and breathtaking views. Covering about 6 miles, this hike takes you through steep climbs, descents, and some unique geological features, including Hansen’s Point. The trail is known for its narrow paths, rock formations, and rewarding viewpoints, with Hansen’s Point being a standout spot to rest and soak in panoramic vistas of the gorge.

The hike is considered moderate to difficult, making it more suitable for experienced hikers. There are several elevation changes along the way, and some parts of the trail, especially the side hike to Hansen’s Point, are not officially marked, adding to the adventure. The route includes notable highlights like Gray’s Arch and various ridges, with both uphill and downhill sections that demand careful footing and stamina. Despite these challenges, the trail offers ample opportunities for water stops and campsites, making it feasible for a long day hike or overnight camping.

Parking at the trailhead can be tight, particularly during peak seasons, so it’s recommended to arrive early. The Rough Trail is well-maintained, but due to its length and the punchy, uneven terrain, hikers should plan for a slow and steady pace. Hiking poles are recommended to manage the steeper sections, both uphill and downhill. Overall, the Rough Trail to Hanson’s Point is a must-do for those seeking adventure and stunning natural beauty in the heart of Kentucky.
