Camp in the Valley of the Moon

Wadi Rum Village, Jordan

Description

Added by Margo Schmiederer

A beautiful desert valley of great historical significance near Petra

Wadi Rum, also known as the Valley of the Moon, is a nature preserve south of Petra, known for its beauty and history. It has striking landscape, ridges, arches, and beautiful colored sand that will leave you in awe. You can tour Wadi Rum by Jeep (or other car) or by camel, typically in groups led by a local guide. Along the tour, typically 1.5-2 hours, you will have the opportunity to stop to take pictures, see inscriptions that date back to pre-historic times, and hike to a small waterfall - depending on your guide. Since the guides are locals, you will also have the wonderful opportunity to get to know them and learn more about their culture as many of them are Bedouin.

Many of the tours offer transportation to and from Petra (or Wadi Musa, the town just outside of Petra) for an extra fee.

It is also very typical to couple the Jeep tour with a night's stay at a Bedouin camp, a group of huts that surround a main dining room. Since the desert can get cold at night, most huts have portable heaters - but bring layers just in case! At the camp, and again depending on your tour, you will have a traditional dinner prepared and served by the tour guides (men from the local village). Some of the tours also invite all guests to sit around fires and listen to music played by locals while drinking tea - a custom in the area. Only one night in Wadi Rum is needed to relish all that the area has to offer.

Be sure to bring your camera with you - you may never see anything like Wadi Rum again!

History: The area has been inhabited by humans since the pre-historic times, including the Nabataeans who left their mark on the area in the form of petroglyphs and inscriptions. The guides love telling stories and teaching others about their culture as Jordan, and Islamic culture, is often misunderstood. Ask lots of questions and they will be happy to answer!
