Explore the Castello Di Illasi
Illasi, Italy
Description
Added by John Clairmont
Also called Castello Scaligero, the mostly intact remains of this 1000+ year old castle still majestically rise above the town of Illasi.
Before you get your hopes up too much, I do need to disclose that the castle grounds are barbed-wire fenced and off limits. Hence why this adventure is focused on photographing the castle, not exploring it.
The castle was originally built to control the valley floor paths running in the area, with the more popular castle in Soave also supporting this endeavor. You can get some great pictures from hills on either side of the castle, and can even include some vineyards and olive orchards. The sunsets in this area are spectacular as well! The castle lies on a hilly farming ridge running between the towns of Illasi and Cazzano di Tramigna, and there is also a 48.5km biking/hiking trail that runs right up next to the castle walls.
While in the area, I highly recommend eating at the restaurant in the Sporting Hotel San Felice and planning a wine tasting & tour at the Trabucchi d'Illasi.
