Nestled in the heart of the Dolomites, the Alpe di Siusi (Seiser Alm) is a tapestry of rolling meadows, dramatic limestone peaks, and pure alpine air. Of its many treasures, the Forcella Denti di Terrarossa—a jagged mountain pass flanked by the iconic “Red Teeth” (Denti di Terrarossa)—stands out as an exceptional hiking destination, rewarding adventurers with breathtaking panoramas and a sense of true alpine accomplishment.
Your adventure begins at the Alpenhotel Panorama, the gateway to the high pastures of Alpe di Siusi and the beginning of your hike to Forcella Denti di Terrarossa. Take the Alpe di Siusi cable car from Siusi/Seis up to the Compatsch plateau. (Compatsch is the main hub of the Alpe di Siusi, with hotels, shops, and a visitor center.) From Compatsch head up to Alpenhotel Panorama by riding up the scenic Panorama chairlift. But note you need to purchase a ticket to ride up, which you can buy right at the chairlift.
Another option, if you want to save a few bucks and extended your hike, you can simply follow trail markers for “Alpenhotel Panorama” or “Panoramaweg” and walk. It is a gentle, scenic 20–30-minute stroll suitable for all fitness levels, traversing rolling meadows with stunning mountain views.
The classic route to Forcella Denti di Terrarossa begins right at Alpenhotel Panorama and follows well-marked trails through the heart of Alpe di Siusi, with the Rosengarten and Sassolungo groups framing your journey. The hike is moderately challenging, suitable for experienced hikers and fit beginners eager for an adventure.
Begin behind the hotel, joining Trail No. 2 or Trail No. 10 (“Sentiero Panorama”/“Panoramaweg”). The path is broad and meanders gently across lush meadows, with panoramic views of the Dolomite peaks on all sides.
After roughly 30 minutes, you’ll reach a fork. Signs point toward various huts and landmarks. Follow Trail No. 2, marked clearly with red-and-white signposts. This stretch traverses flower-filled meadows. The trail gradually becomes steeper, entering a rockier landscape as you approach the foot of the Denti di Terrarossa.
The last segment is the most demanding. The path ascends sharply in switchbacks, carved into scree and dolomite rock. Take your time and use trekking poles if you have them. As you climb, pause to take in the ever-widening views of the Alpe di Siusi below and the jagged spires above.
As you crest the saddle of Forcella Denti di Terrarossa the world seems to open in every direction: the Seiser Alm stretches away in gentle folds to the west, while the craggy peaks of the Rosengarten/Catinaccio rise to the south and east.
For experienced hikers, it’s possible to continue from the Forcella toward the Tierser Alpl hut (Rifugio Alpe di Tires), adding a rewarding loop and a chance to enjoy lunch or refreshments at the hut. Otherwise, descend the same way you came, savoring the changing perspectives and the wildflowers that bloom in profusion during summer and reward yourself with cold drink back at Alpenhotel Panorama.
