Description

Added by Kelly Park

Lago di Braies — known in German as Pragser Wildsee — is the largest natural lake in the Dolomites and one of the most stunning alpine destinations in northern Italy.

Tucked in a mostly German-speaking region near the Austrian border, this glacial lake is famous for its crystal-clear water that shifts between shades of blue, green, turquoise, and emerald depending on the light. Often compared to Lake Louise in Alberta, Canada, it's an absolute must if you're exploring the Dolomites.

The lake sits about 1.5 hours from Bolzano and 1 hour from Cortina d'Ampezzo — making it an ideal half-day stop.

The Hike

A 2.5-mile loop trail circumnavigates the entire lake with only about 660 feet of elevation gain, making it accessible for most hikers. Plan for 1–2 hours depending on how often you stop to take in the views (and you will stop often). The trail is well-worn and easy to follow — you can start by going left or right from the parking lot, and either way you'll end up back where you started.

Highlights along the loop:

  • A small chapel and barn to the right of the hotel
  • Halfway through, the trail passes through a gate onto farmland with roaming cows — a surprisingly charming detour
  • Constant views of the towering Dolomite peaks reflecting off the lake

Get there early — this is a popular destination and crowds build quickly in summer.

Water Activities

The lake is best known for its iconic wooden rowboats, available to rent from the boathouse near Hotel Pragser Wildsee. Rentals run approximately €12 for 30 minutes or €18 for an hour. Paddling out to the middle of the lake with the mountains looming around you is an unforgettable experience and the classic photo op you've seen everywhere.

Other water options:

  • Canoeing and kayaking available at the dock
  • Stand-up paddleboarding — bring your own board and launch from the small beach about half a mile down the left trail
  • Swimming in the glacially cold water for the brave

Practical Info

  • Parking: Designated lot at the trailhead — €5–6 per car
  • Food: Several cafes near the hotel serve coffee, beer, and local food
  • Camping: Not permitted in the area — Hotel Pragser Wildsee is the on-site accommodation option
  • Winter: The trail is also popular for snowshoeing and XC skiing; the Alta Via 1 long-distance trail passes through for multi-day hikers

Lago di Braies (Pragser Wildsee) Reviews

Great spot- super easy to access. A little bit crowded but off season is beautiful with snow on the mountains all around. Water is low in the spring so the boats aren’t out until peak season.

Really peaceful area with mountains surrounding the entire lake. Good for kayaks, canoes or just relaxing.

Lago di Braies is a Dolomites must-see. To really experience this beautiful spot, I highly recommend hiking the full circuit around the lake. Most of the crowds stick to the shoreline closest to the hotel and boathouse, so if you want to have a more intimate adventure, take the trail that loops around the lake. This easy hiking trail takes around 1 hour, although you'll probably find it'll take you longer as you'll almost certainly want to stop every few meters to take pictures.

Despite the huge crowds, you still can't come to the Dolomites and not visit Lago di Braies. Make sure to arrive early to avoid the largest crowds. Taking out a boat on the lake is a great way to get away from other people and enjoy floating around on the lake surrounded by towering mountains all around you.
