Trail 257, located near Harrison, Idaho, offers mountain bikers a thrilling ride through the scenic landscapes of the Coeur d’Alene National Forest. This point-to-point trail extends approximately 2.5 miles, providing a mix of fast descents and technical sections that cater to intermediate riders.
Trail Overview:
Starting from Forest Service Road 439, Trail 257 descends through a dense forest, presenting riders with a series of playful turns and a few root-laden segments. Midway, it intersects with Trail 258 (The Connector), offering options to extend your ride. As you approach the final stretch, the trail narrows and becomes off-camber, culminating in a double creek crossing before ending at Forest Service Road 438 (Beauty Creek Road).
Parking:
Parking is available near the trail’s endpoints. Riders often leave vehicles at the bottom of the trail on Forest Service Road 438 for shuttle purposes or choose to climb from this point. The upper parking area is situated along Forest Service Road 439. Due to limited space, it’s advisable to arrive early, especially during peak riding seasons.
Dog Policy:
Dogs are permitted on Trail 257. However, given the trail’s popularity among mountain bikers and its fast-paced sections, it’s recommended to keep dogs leashed and under control to ensure the safety of all trail users.
Permits and Fees:
Access to Trail 257 is free, and no permits are required for day use. Riders should adhere to U.S. Forest Service regulations and practice Leave No Trace principles to preserve the trail’s natural beauty.
Additional Considerations:
• Trail Conditions: While generally smooth, certain sections feature roots, a small stream crossing, and a brief rocky segment near the end. Riders should be prepared for varying terrain and exercise caution, especially on the narrower, off-camber portions.
• Shuttle Options: Trail 257 can be shuttled using the parking areas at both ends. Alternatively, riders can choose to climb the trail, leaving their vehicle at the bottom and ascending to the top.
• Safety: Be mindful of other trail users, including hikers and uphill riders. Always maintain control, especially on blind corners and technical sections.

Trail 257 Reviews
We went 4/19/26 and 257 is clear! Ran into some snow close to the top of Coeur d’Alene Mtn and a couple trees…. 227 was not cleared. We went down the first section (about a mile) then cut off on the FS road to get back.. it was that bad. SO MANY TREES DOWN. It took us an hour and a half to go that short mile section of 227, climbing over easily 20+ massive trees. We had hopes it would get better.. it did not 😅 Not sure what the other side of 227 looks like but I’d imagine the same. We will make sure to pack the saw next time to do some work
4.0
Great mtb loop if you’re looking for a longer ride. Includes a good amount of climbing, but worth it for the fun downhills
