Description

The Pyramid and Ball Lakes Trail is a scenic alpine hike in northern Idaho, offering pristine wilderness views, crystal-clear lakes, and a peaceful backcountry experience. Starting from the trailhead near Priest Lake, this moderately challenging route takes hikers through lush evergreen forest, across wildflower-filled meadows, and into high-elevation basins surrounded by rugged peaks. The trail first leads to Pyramid Lake, a beautiful spot for a break or picnic, before continuing to the more remote Ball Lake. Both lakes offer incredible photo opportunities and are great spots for fishing, wildlife watching, and relaxing in solitude.
Activities:
Hiking, backpacking, fishing, photography, and wildlife viewing are popular here. Swimming is possible but the water is very cold, even in summer.
Camping:
Dispersed camping is allowed in the surrounding National Forest, and there are primitive spots near both lakes. Follow Leave No Trace principles to protect the area.
Permits:
No special permits are required for day use. Overnight stays may require a free self-issue wilderness permit at the trailhead depending on the season.
Parking:
Limited parking is available at the trailhead, so plan to arrive early during summer weekends.
Dogs:
Leashed dogs are welcome and will enjoy the cooler alpine air.
Other Tips:
Bring layers, as weather can change quickly at higher elevations, and be prepared for some steep sections and possible snow patches early in the season. Insect repellent is recommended in mid-summer due to mosquitoes near the lakes.

Pyramid and Ball Lakes Trail Reviews
Had all the lakes to ourself! Huckleberries were EVERYWHERE so we snacked on the way up to the lakes :) Very peaceful and beautiful views

One of my favorite hikes in the area! Pretty easy hike into pyramid and a bit of a climb into upper ball lake. We usually head straight for upper ball and hangout on a large rock up there to enjoy the view and have some snacks

This is one of my favorite hikes! The hike into pyramid isn’t bad, the trail up to ball lakes is a bit of a climb but so worth it. There are some great views looking down at pyramid lake as you are heading up to ball lake. It has become more popular over the years but still a great hike
