The shortest route to the Ko'olau summit that offers stunning views of layered mountains and the sea.
Access: There are two options for accessing the trailhead:
(1) Get a permit from the Division of Forestry and Wildlife Oahu so you can drive the 6-mile dirt road to the true trailhead. The permit provides you car access through the locked gate and is only available on weekends and holidays. You'll want an AWD/4WD vehicle for the dirt road, especially if it is muddy. Round trip, this hike option is about 7 miles.
(2) Park outside the locked gate and hike/run the 6 miles to the true trailhead. No permit is needed for this option. Round trip, this hike option is about 19 miles.
Route Description: A mellow hike that winds through a plethora of native yellow, pink and red Ohi'a trees, palms, and finishes with a stunning viewpoint that overlooks pyramid peak (Pu'u 'Ohulehule), Kahana valley, and Ka'a'awa Valley. The summit is a flat and grassy area...perfect for soaking up the views and breeze, having a picnic, and/or relaxing a while before heading back.
And the view is not something to miss... If you catch it on a clear day, it is breathtaking and unlike any other trail's viewpoint!
