Paddling to this small island off Oahu is a one-of-a-kind experience in Hawaii. You can paddle or swim, or at low tide, even walk out to Mokoli‘i.
Mokoli‘i is an island located off the coast of Kualoa Regional Park. You can swim, kayak, or SUP to the island. When it’s low tide, you’re actually able to walk out there, but be mindful of the tides, because the current picks up on higher tides, which makes the route back more difficult. If you choose to hike/swim out there, it takes about 15 minutes. Make sure to wear some sort of water shoe to help you on the rocks. Once you get to the island, there’s a short 10-minute hike that takes you to the top of Mokoli‘i. It’s not too strenuous, but the trails are narrow and rocky – just be careful going up and down. At Kualoa Regional Park, there’s plenty of parking. There are also lifeguards on duty who you can chat with if you have any concerns about the trek to Mokoli‘i. If you need to rent kayaks, you can rent them from Kailua Sailboards. Once you make it back to shore, head up to Kahuku for either Fumi's Shrimp Truck or an ahi poke bowl at Kahuku Superette.
