A great destination on the south shores of Oahu, this small cove has a gorgeous beach with crystal clear water and is surrounded on either side by large lava formations.

When driving along the Kalonianaole Highway, traveling towards east from Hawai'i Kai, keep an eye out for the Hanola Blowhole lookout... Park at the lookout and walk out towards the highway. It is here, next to the entrance, that you will find a trail heading down into the cove. From the road it is only a few hundred feet to the beach, and as soon as you step foot on the trail you will see it.

The trail is rocky and there is no definitive way to traverse down but tread carefully and work your way down slowly... the beach is well worth the effort! Once you make your way down to the beach, find a spot in the sand and lay your towel down, it is time to relax.

The sun exposure is particularly good in the midday and the ocean provides a nice break from a hard session of beach lounging/sun bathing.

If you are feeling slightly more adventurous then you can walk around the swimming hole and explore the old lava run.  A cliff marks the end of the cove and from here you will have a great view of the ocean, Sandy's beach, and back towards Hanauma Bay. You can also snorkel in and around the cove... occasionally people venture out past the coves protection and into the more open water.

Caution: The cove is not for the faint of heart... most of the time the conditions are good and there is no need to worry…however the ocean can get very rough and big waves can make the cove pretty treacherous. There have been a few people pulled out into deeper water and even some deaths… ‘when in doubt, don't go out'.

This cove is located next to the parking area for the Halona Blow Hole Lookout. The path down to the cove is just southwest of the parking area. If you get there early in the morning, you'll beat the crowds of tour buses coming to blow hole parking lot. Keep in mind, the current can be very strong at the cove, so this may be a great place to relax and sit on the beach, but please don't go in the water if you're not comfortable or a strong swimmer.

It's a cool spot with easy parking right above
