A high-thrill photography exercise above the deepest canyon in the world
Vikos canyon is one of the most magnificent canyons in the mountain range of Pindus, with a length of 20km and walls that range from 120 to 490m deep and a width ranging from 400m to just a few meters at its narrowest part. The canyon is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the deepest canyon in the world in proportion to its width. The main part of the gorge stretches from the village of Vikos to Monodendri and has a depth of approximately 1000m.
Hiking the gorge is an amazing experience offering thrills and excitement. Almost equally impressive to walking inside the gorge is overlooking the very deep canyon from above. Among the locations that one may have a unique view of the canyon is the convent of Aghia Paraskevi that is located near the village of Monodendri.
You may approach the village by car. As cars cannot enter the village, you can park your car at the entrance and walk to the central square of the beautiful village with stone houses. A stone trail starts from the square and descents towards the convent. The trail is no longer than a km and takes you at the entrance of convent.
The convent is built at the edge of the walls of the canyon and from there you may enjoy a magnificent view of the majestic canyon - a perfect spot for photographs.
From the convent, you may proceed at *your own risk* and extremely carefully at very narrow trail that is curved on the wall of the gorge. Proceed only if you are not afraid of heights and feel confident to walk on a totally exposed trail hundreds of meters above the ground. The trail leads to another part of the convent and it is an exercise of thrill to be there. Do not attempt to do it if the weather conditions are not perfect as the risk of falling is fatal and also the risk of falling rocks is high. The view though is unique and rewarding.
