Ride the Wave or Watch the Show in the Heart of the English Garden
Nestled within the lush, sprawling expanse of Munich’s famed English Garden lies a phenomenon that surprises many first-time visitors: a year-round surfing destination. The Eisbach is a small manmade river that flows through the park, and at its southernmost edge, it delivers an unexpected spectacle—a standing wave that has become both a mecca for river surfers and a magnet for curious onlookers from around the world.

The idea for the Eisbach wave—a unique standing wave ideal for surfing—emerged organically in the 1970s, when local surfers, seeking alternatives to the distant coasts, began experimenting with the river’s currents near the Prinzregentenstraße bridge.

Today, the Eisbach wave is internationally famous, mentioned in guidebooks and surf magazines, and featured in documentaries. It is considered the birthplace of river surfing as a modern urban sport.

Who Can Surf?
The Eisbach wave is not a gentle introduction to surfing. It is a fast, powerful, and narrow wave, typically just over a meter high, with ice-cold, rapidly flowing water. The wave is best suited for experienced surfers with strong board control and good balance. It is a public space, and, in principle, anyone with a surfboard and the necessary skills can join the locals. However, there are no lessons or rentals available on-site.

If surfing the Eisbach is a challenge best left to the experts, watching it is entertainment for all. The spot beneath the bridge is a vibrant meeting point, often surrounded by throngs of tourists and locals alike. Visitors find themselves mere feet from the action, separated only by the river’s edge, with the surfers’ maneuvers and spills often sending up refreshing sprays of water.

Cameras are a must; the juxtaposition of wetsuited surfers carving the wave against a backdrop of leafy trees and classical architecture is a striking, photogenic scene that’s unique to Munich.
