Description

A beautiful hike with several waterfalls, located in the heart of Georgia.

Parking areas are on the opposite side of the road where the trailhead is located and the fee is $5. If paying for parking isn't in your agenda, there is a gas station down the road on the same side as the trailhead where free parking is occasionally available.

The trail begins off High Falls road, indicated by a sign. At the beginning, the trail descends along several wooden stairs. There are overlooks you can stop at to view the falls from above.

At the base of the stairs, there is a sandy shore with a great view of High Falls. Here you can stop to splash around and wade in the waters. There's a section at the base of the falls where the current from the waterfall and the formation of rocks is perfect as a water slide.

The trail continues on to several other views of the Towaliga River and through the forested areas alongside the river. The trail then loops back towards High Falls and back up the stairs to return to the trailhead.

For more, head back to the opposite side of the road where parking is located. This is the rest of the park with a view of the dam, picnic tables, grills, fields for frisbee, camping areas, and more.

If you want to make this an overnight adventure, High Falls has 100 campsites and 6 yurts to book. Make your reservation here: http://gastateparks.org/HighFalls.

High Falls Loop Reviews

There's a nice bit of variety in the High Falls trail system. Great for families or the solo adventurer...you have a big chance of seeing some wildlife here! I saw some deer, blue jays, hawks, and snakes! Highly recommend.

I completed both the falls side trail and tranquillity trail. Four miles total. Falls size trail was well maintained and marked tranquility must not get many visitors because it was not as well maintained. Overall it was relaxing and nice but nothing too exciting.

It's an easy 1hr drive from Atlanta to High Falls and well worth it! Went on a Monday in July, saw some people but not too many and was easy to find our own section of the river/falls less than 0.5 miles from the trailhead. Once you're away from the road and the bigger falls at the top there's easy access to swimming in the river or in the small pools at the base of the smaller waterfalls. Had an amazing day relaxing in the warm water (was at least 80 degrees)!

Hello! A helpful heads up- this park has many signs warning visitors to stay off all the falls. Unfortunately you cannot swim or play in the waters by the falls. They do have a separate swimming pool though! If you're interested in finding a sliding rock there are safe ones to visit at Watson Mill Bridge and Tallulah Gorge. At Tallulah Gorge, you'll need a free permit. The number is limited and often runs out early in the day.

It's a nice park with some short and easy trails. Swimming technically isn't allowed but there will still be dozens of people doing it. There's some good views, nice swimming spots, as well as places to BBQ and fish.
