Above the village of Funninger sits the ridge line of Hvíthamar Mountain - an amazing lookout over Eysturoy Island with views of Kalsoy and other surrounding islands.

The toughest part of this hike is finding the start of it. The start of the hike isn’t marked and there are a small handful (2 or 3) of places to park when you do find it. I’ve placed a map in the photos section to outline the parking spot and the easterly direction of the hike you’ll take up to the ridge. The key to finding the spot is that after the S curve in the road you’ll drive about 0.5 miles more until you see a fence. Directly after that fence on the eastern side of the road, you’ll see a gravel area in which you can park your car.

Once parked, the hike is straightforward. You’ll follow the fence line up the hill. While the hike is quite short, the slope and elevation will certainly make you earn the views. In total the hike to the top can take from 10-25 minutes depending on your speed. Follow the fence all the way up the hill and once you reach the ridgeline it will become obvious. Note that there are certain areas blocked off by fencing or signs, so please respect the land which you are hiking.

Once on top explore the ridgeline and take in the beautiful surroundings. Go back down the same way you came.

Pro tip: Go as early in the day as possible. This ensures that the parking spots wont be filled and you’ll likely have the place all to yourself.
