About this place

Added by Liz Andrew

Catarata La Congreja is a trail through dry tropical forest and open grassland that leads to a 131 ft waterfall near Bagaces, Guanacaste, Costa Rica.

Seizing the opportunity to walk through Costa Rica's dry tropical forest eco system is well worth any effort getting to the park. You'll be greeted with little yellow butterflies, and have plenty of chances to spot various birds, bugs, reptiles, and mammals. Word of the wise, the trail seems pretty harmless, albeit occasionally strenuous, but try to stay present as often as you can. I absolutely came in close contact with a rattlesnake (crotalis simus) about an hour in.

The total hike can take about 4 hours, and you'll want to arrive well before noon, as they close the path at that time. Unfortunately the way back is more difficult, as its mostly downhill on the way there - so pack a healthy lunch and relax your feet while you are resting at the waterfall. The cost of admission is 1,000 colones at the park gate (not open Mondays!), and $17 (card only) once at the welcome center. You'll also be able to use bathrooms and top up your water bottle if you need to. Speaking of which, I only brought about 25oz of water with me, and ran through it a half an hour before my trek ended, so definitely don't skimp!
