Description

Added by Nallely Bean

This scenic route to Browns Creek Falls is a standout mountain-day-hike in the Colorado Rockies—moderate in length, strong on payoff, and rich in variety. Starting from a forested trailhead, you’ll climb through pine and aspen forest, follow Browns Creek, and eventually arrive at a dramatic, year-round waterfall nestled beneath towering peaks.

Trail Basics & What to Expect

  • Terrain: The route begins with a steeper climb (especially in the first mile), then mellows into gentler forest singletrack alongside Browns Creek, crossing bridges and passing meadows.

  • Destination: The waterfall is a two-tiered cascade, framed by canyon walls, flowing robustly in spring/summer and still significant other seasons.

Access, Rules & Logistics

  • Trailhead / Parking: Located off Forest Service Road 272 (dirt road off CO 285/CR-270 near Buena Vista/Nathrop). Large parking lot and pit toilets.

  • Seasonal Considerations: Open most of the year; spring may bring higher flows and some muddy or rocky sections.

  • Dogs: Leashed dogs are allowed.

  • Facilities: Minimal; pit toilet at trailhead, no formal amenities further in.

  • Safety & Tips:

    • Wear sturdy footwear—rocks and roots abound, especially in the early climb.

    • A portion of the gain is front-loaded; the final section is gentler.

    • Stay on the trail; canyon walls near the falls can be steep/slippery.

    • Pack out trash; dispersed camping happens nearby—respect the area.

Why Visit Browns Creek Falls?

  • Rare waterfall in this region of Colorado—majestic cascade set in rugged terrain.

  • Forest-to-meadow-to-creek progression: the variety in just ~6 miles is impressive.

  • Great for hikers wanting a day adventure with strong scenery but manageable logistics.

  • Strong photo opportunities: waterfall, forest canopy, creek crossings, mountain views.

  • Suitable for families and well-broken hikers—while moderate, it’s not extreme.
