Explore this section of historic path connecting two quiet Santander towns
The Real is about a 10km hike, beginning in Barichara, and ending in the town of Guane. It winds along the hillsides and along a beautiful canyon; a cobblestone path bordered by stone walls and lush green countryside. Originally built by the indigenous Guane people, it was most recently restored in 1864 by the George von Lenguerke, a German engineer who moved to Colombia and dedicated himself to road construction and land development.
The trail is mostly downhill, but although it's not particularly strenuous, I would recommend starting early to avoid the heat of midday.
From San Gil, take a bus from the local station (about $4,000 COP, $1.5 USD) to Barichara. Get off at the main square and walk uphill to the top left corner of town, where you'll find the start of the path.
Wind your way down to Guane, where you can either catch a bus back to San Gil through Barichara (about $6,000 COP, $2 USD) or retrace your steps back up the hill to Barichara.
