Description

This spectacular coastal loop combines two of Parc national du Bic's signature trails (Le Chemin du Nord and Le Contrebandier Loop), offering a remarkable journey along the St. Lawrence River's southern shore. The route showcases the park's dramatic marriage of sea and mountain, where the Appalachian foothills meet the expansive waters of the St. Lawrence.
Trail Description The journey begins at the Cap-à-l'Orignal parking area, following Le Chemin du Nord as it traces the rugged coastline. The initial section winds through a mixed forest of birch and spruce before emerging onto exposed headlands. Here, ancient red rocks, sculpted by millennia of waves, form natural observation platforms overlooking the St. Lawrence.
The trail climbs gradually along the peninsula's northern edge, offering prime opportunities for spotting harbor seals basking on offshore rocks during low tide. During migration seasons (spring and fall), this section serves as an excellent vantage point for observing seabirds and the occasional whale spout in the distance.
At approximately the halfway point, the trail transitions into Le Contrebandier (The Smuggler's Trail), named for the historic bootleggers who once used these remote shores. This section features more challenging terrain with several steep but short climbs over rocky outcrops. The effort is rewarded with panoramic views of the St. Lawrence River and the distant Charlevoix mountains on the north shore.
