A nice year-round trail in a City of Ottawa natural area (Marlborough Forest). This loop goes around a Ducks Unlimited pond (Rogers Pond) and travels through forest and a large meadow.
The trail runs south from the parking lot down a gravel lane (access for the Ducks Unlimited dam). The trail then loops around Rogers Pond. The trail is initially marked by orange markers (Rideau Trail markers for trail from Ottawa to Kingston), then the Cedar Grove side loop is marked by blue markers. The trail is cleared and marked by the Rideau Trail Association on a volunteer basis, a map is available from their website (Map 15 - Marlborough Forest). The hike could be extended either to the south or north as an out-back on the main Rideau Trail. The trail is in good condition for a forest trail, but expect roots, rocks and mud.
The area has abundant wildlife; marsh and forest birds are commonly seen and snakes and turtles sometimes seen. Other wildlife is common but shy as the area is hunted in the fall (I wear safety orange during the fall and don't use the trail during the 2 weeks of rifle season for deer). The trail on the north side of the pond is mixed forest and pretty in the fall. Bugs can be bad in the spring and summer so come prepared.
