Description

Added by Genevieve Scott Anthony

Tucked near the west gate of Algonquin Provincial Park, the Beetle Lake Trail offers a rich taste of Canadian Shield terrain—rocky ridges, beaver-pond wetlands, hardwood forest and a standout lookout over Oxtongue Lake—all in a manageable loop.

Trail Basics & What to Expect

  • Difficulty: Rated moderate to challenging due to ridges, rocky terrain and some steep sections.

  • Terrain: Mixed—start in hardwood forest, traverse ridges of exposed rock, descend by a creek/pond section, and finish at a lookout over Oxtongue Lake.

  • Highlights along the way:

    • A hardwood forest alive with fall colour and mossy stone.

    • Wetland/beaver‐pond area with rich habitat for birds and beaver activity.

    • A dramatic rocky ridge viewpoint offering panoramic views of Oxtongue Lake.

Access, Rules & Logistics

  • Trailhead / Parking: Located at 1035 Algonquin Outfitters Road, off Hwy 60/Highway 60 in the Algonquin Highlands region.

  • Seasonal Note: The west‐side loop crosses private property and is closed in winter, so only the east side trail is open then.

  • Facilities: Minimal—trailhead signage available, but plan for no major amenities.

  • Dogs: Dogs allowed (on leash recommended) as it’s a wilderness trail.

  • Safety & Tips:

    • Wear sturdy shoes—the ridge and rocky sections can be slippery or steep.

    • Bug spray helpful in warmer months near wetland areas.

    • Stay on the marked trail and respect private land sections (especially on the west loop).

    • Best colours come in autumn, but the trail is beautiful year-round.

Why Visit?

  • Walk a moderate loop with rich visual variety—forest, wetlands, rocky ridge, and lake vista.

  • Experience one of the region’s stronger lookouts—the ridge over Oxtongue Lake is especially rewarding.

  • Great for nature lovers who want more than a simple stroll but less than a back-country trek.

  • Wildlife potential throughout—beavers, birds, deer, and the mix of terrain supports lots of life.

  • Proximity to Algonquin and local trails makes it a convenient add-on or detour when exploring the Highlands.
