The Elk River is one of British Columbia’s premier blue-ribbon trout fisheries, and the section from Fernie to Cokato offers a stunning combination of productive fishing waters and breathtaking Rocky Mountain scenery. This float trip is popular with anglers and paddlers looking for a mix of gentle drifts, occasional riffles, and easy access points along the way.
Fishing Highlights
The Elk River is known for its healthy populations of wild Westslope cutthroat trout, with opportunities to hook bull trout as well. The stretch between Fernie and Cokato features deep pools, cut banks, and gravel runs ideal for fly fishing. Dry flies, nymphs, and streamers can all produce excellent results depending on the season. Prime fishing months run from late June through September when water clarity improves and insect hatches are at their peak.
Floating the River
This section is well-suited for drift boats, rafts, or inflatable kayaks. The current is moderate, with minimal whitewater, making it ideal for anglers who want to cover more water while casting. Plan for several hours on the river, depending on stops, and always check local water conditions before launching.
Access and Parking
The primary put-in is near downtown Fernie, with the take-out located at Cokato Road. Parking is available at both access points, but can be limited during peak summer weekends, so arrive early. Make sure your shuttle is arranged ahead of time.
Permits and Regulations
-
Fishing License: A valid British Columbia Freshwater Fishing License is required, along with a Classified Waters License for the Elk River.
-
Season: Check provincial regulations for seasonal openings and closures.
-
Catch Limits: Strict catch-and-release rules apply for many species—review the latest fishing regulations before heading out.
More information and current regulations can be found on the BC Fishing Regulations website.
Gear and Preparation
Bring a 4–6 weight fly rod, floating line, and a variety of patterns to match local hatches. Waders can be helpful in cooler months or for wading side channels. Polarized sunglasses are essential for spotting fish, and a personal flotation device is required by law when boating.
Wildlife and Scenery
This float offers postcard views of the Canadian Rockies and frequent sightings of eagles, ospreys, deer, and even elk. Keep your camera ready, but give wildlife plenty of space.

Elk River: Fernie to Cokato Reviews
Class I (and a few class II) rapids along this section of the Elk River. Caught a few Westslope Cutthroat Trout and enjoyed the scenery. Tubers and paddleboarders along the way, but not enough where fishing is slowed. The fish were rising at almost any dry fly I put on the water. Watch for downed trees in the river. There was one section where you will come across an area where the river flows right into a massive downed tree. There is a sign to warn you of the uocoming obstruction. It’s important to stay river right here and possibly portage your boat to the end of the section.
