Review: Danner N45 Trail Hiker
A perfect hike made even better by the perfect hiker.
If you’ve ever hiked Annie’s Canyon in Encinitas, you know it’s got a little bit of everything—wide, sandy trails, tight slot canyons, and just enough scrambling to keep things interesting. It’s the kind of route that demands a shoe that can handle variety. So, when my friend Paulo and I set out to test the new Danner N45 hikers—me in the women’s version, him in the men’s—we were excited to see how they’d perform.
As soon as we got started on this dry and hot trail I noticed that these shoes are incredibly breathable. The day had started out cool along the coast, but as we headed out from the parking lot the sun burnt off some marine layer heated up the trail fast. Thankfully, the N45’s lightweight construction and breathable upper meant my feet never felt stifled. Paulo, who said his feet tend to get pretty hot on hikes and runs, even joked that it felt like these hikers had built-in AC.
Comfort-wise, these felt good straight out of the box. No weird pressure points, and neither of us felt like we needed to break them in. Danner's nitrogen-infused EnduroFoam midsole provided a surprising amount of bounce, making the few fairly steep inclines along Annie's Canyon feel a little less punishing. I noticed the difference most on the way down, however. Normally, descending can feel pretty gnarly on my knees, but I felt like the cushioning of the N45s helped absorb some of that impact.
Paulo, who’s a bit more into the shoe world than I am, was especially excited about the recraftable Vibram sole and was stoked on the Megagrip tech while we were climbing our way up through the slot canyon on the trail. We didn’t hit any water crossings on this dry hike, but given how solid the traction felt on dry rock and loose dirt, I’d trust these in wetter conditions, too.
Another standout feature for me was the fit of the women's version. Danner designed the women’s hiker with a Precision Fit, meaning it’s specifically built for women’s feet rather than just a downsized men’s shoe. I didn’t really think about it at first, but after a few miles, I realized how nice it felt to have just the right amount of room in the toe box while still getting a snug fit around my heel.
By the time we made it back to the car, neither of us was in a hurry to take our shoes off—a rare thing after a hot hike with steep ups and downs. The N45 proved to be one of those rare hikers that feels just as good at the end of the trail as it does at the start.
Overall, the Danner N45 hits that sweet spot between performance and versatility. It’s light enough for everyday adventures but is also built tough enough for longer treks and adventures. And the fact that it’s recraftable makes you want to wear them as much as you can with no fear of wearing them out too much! Paulo and I both walked away impressed and stoked to plan our next hike.
