The South Plateau Trail to Bird Island in Monterey County, California, is a moderately challenging hiking trail. Spanning approximately 1.69 miles round trip, the trail offers a variety of terrain, including sandy beaches, rocky cliffs, and dense coastal scrub. The trailhead is located at the parking lot of the Point Lobos State Natural Reserve. The trail is well-marked and maintained, with a steady incline that may require some physical exertion. Hikers will pass through a tunnel of Monterey Cypress trees before reaching the South Plateau, which offers panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. The trail then descends towards Bird Island, a notable landmark that is home to a large colony of Brandt's Cormorants. The trail is open year-round, but the best time to visit is during the spring and fall when the weather is mild. Hikers should wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water.
