Description

Added by Outbound

Located just off Highway 395 north of Mammoth Lakes, the Obsidian Dome is a dramatic volcanic glass formation within Inyo National Forest. The site is open year-round, weather and road conditions permitting, and is accessible via a short dirt spur from the highway.

Permits & Fees

  • There are no fees or permits required to visit the Obsidian Dome.

Parking & Trail Conditions

  • You’ll find two informal parking areas near the base—either works, though the first is often easier to access.

  • The road to the trailhead is dirt but generally manageable with a standard 2WD vehicle during summer. AWD or 4WD are recommended in winter months.

  • The trail itself is short (~1.0 mi round-trip), lightly defined, and easy to extend with offshoots once on top of the dome.

Dogs

  • Leashed dogs are welcome throughout all developed recreation areas here.

Things to Keep an Eye Out For

  • Admire the smooth, black obsidian boulders—a remnant of a phreatic volcanic explosion roughly 600 years ago  .

  • In winter, the area transforms into a scenic snowshoeing and cross-country skiing destination with groomed loops ranging from easy to moderate (~2.6 miles to 6 miles -- see Obsidian Dome West Loop).

After-Hike Refreshments

  • Head back to the June Lake Village and unwind at June Lake Brewing, a popular craft beer spot where locals and visitors gather to relax after adventures.

Interesting geological formation with a unique past. Rough road if you drive in. There are obsidian shards everywhere. Check your tires.
