About this place

Added by Josiah Roe

Bodega Head Nature Trail offers up gorgeous views of Bodega Bay and the California Coast including migrating grey whales, sea lions, and other coastal wildlife.

Sitting west of the San Andrea fault, the Bodega Head is a massive chunk of granite from the Salinian Block, a geological terrane that contains Point Reyes and the Farallon Islands, and shares its origins with the Sierra Nevada mountains, the Head itself having been carried hundreds of miles to the northwest as the Pacific and North American plates move past each other.

Located in the 17 mile long Sonoma Coast State Park, the Bodega Head Trail is an easy but staggeringly beautiful loop trail around the Head giving breathtaking views up and down the California Coast and inland over Bodega Bay. From late Winter to Spring the Head is an ideal place to view migrating Grey Whales.

To get there take Bay Flat / Westhore Road from Highway 1 / PCH in Bodega Bay. Follow it till it dead ends in the trailhead parking lot. The trail itself can be taken in either a clockwise or counter clockwise fashion.
