Description

Added by Outbound

If you want a short but deeply evocative walk that blends forest, ocean, and coastal geology, the Cypress Grove Trail is a must do. It’s one of the most celebrated hikes in Point Lobos, partly for its unique grove of Monterey cypress trees and partly for the dramatic seaside views that greet you at nearly every turn.

Trail Basics & Route Overview

  • Elevation Change / Difficulty: Easy terrain, modest elevation changes.

  • Trail Surface & Accessibility: Mostly natural path, rock and dirt. The first ~¼ mile is accessible (firmer surface) and provides good views of coves.

  • Start / Trailhead: Begins at the Sea Lion Point parking lot.

Highlights & What You’ll See

  • Monterey Cypress Grove (Allan Memorial Grove): The trail loops through one of just two naturally occurring stands of Monterey cypress on earth (the other is across Carmel Bay).

  • Ocean & Cove Views: The trail hugs cliff edges and offers expansive views of Pinnacle Cove, Cypress Cove, Headland Cove, and rocky headlands jutting into the Pacific.

  • Wildlife Watching: Keep an eye out for sea lions on offshore rocks, sea otters in kelp beds, whales offshore (in season), and deer wandering the grove.

  • Lichen, Algae & Plant Life: Notice the orange-tinged “stuff” clinging to tree trunks and rocks—that’s actually Trentepohlia (green algae)—harmless to the trees but vivid in color.

  • Ancient Trees in a Harsh Climate: These cypress trees endure salt spray, wind, and rugged soil. Their contorted shapes whisper climate history and resilience.

Access, Rules & Tips

  • Entry & Parking: Use the Sea Lion Point lot. It’s typical to drive straight down from the Reserve entrance and aim for that lot.

  • Dogs / Pets: Not allowed. The Reserve enforces a strict no dogs policy (except service animals).

  • Trail Etiquette & Safety:

    • Stay on marked trails to protect fragile bluff areas and plant communities.

    • Watch your footing—some sections are rocky, uneven, or steep near edges.

    • No drones, no off-trail shortcuts, no removal of vegetation or rocks.

  • Best Times: Early mornings or later in the afternoon are ideal to avoid crowds. Overcast / low sun gives dramatic lighting through the groves.

  • Accessibility Note: The first ~0.25 mile is rated accessible and has an accessible comfort station / parking.

Why Visit Cypress Grove Trail?

  • Walk among rare, ancient Monterey cypress trees—a truly special botanical experience.

  • Enjoy spectacular sea views and coastal vistas in a compact loop.

  • Excellent wildlife viewing—especially marine mammals, coastal birds, and deer.

  • Witness intriguing lichen, algae, and coastal flora in a dynamic ecosystem.

  • Easy-to-moderate trail, perfect when you’re short on time but want a “signature” Point Lobos hike.

  • It serves as a fantastic starter or connector trail—you can combine it with South Shore, Sand Hill, or Bird Island for longer adventures.

Cypress Grove Trail Reviews

Probably the most popular section of Point Lobos Preserve. Parking lot is very small but there are portapottys and flush toilets in the lot. Varying levels of tidiness but it is a holiday week. Truly amazing views on this hike. Ive been here 3 times over the years and the view never gets old!
