Description

Added by Dominic Pascucci

Hidden in the Sunset District, the Sunset Reservoir is more than just piece of city infrastructure — its surrounding paths make for a convenient urban stroll with peaceful views, a solar rooftop, and surprising vistas of San Francisco.

Trail & Walk Details

  • Many local walkers estimate the full circuit to be around one mile and finishable in 15–20 minutes at a casual pace.

  • The path is paved or well-maintained, making it accessible for casual walkers, families, or those looking for a quick break.

  • There’s a pathway or walking ramp up to the top of the reservoir (from Ortega & 28th), offering elevated views over the neighborhood, and in some cases even a peek of the Golden Gate Bridge on clearer days.

Reservoir Facts & Features

  • Sunset Reservoir is a subterranean / covered reservoir beneath the walking paths — you won’t see a conventional open water surface.

  • It covers 11 acres, holds up to 270 acre-feet of water, and is one of San Francisco’s terminal reservoirs in the municipal water network.

  • In 2010, a solar canopy of nearly 24,000 solar panels was installed over the reservoir roof (now one of the city’s largest rooftop solar installations).

Use, Policies & Tips

  • The walking path is open year-round

  • Dogs are allowed, on-leash

  • Because this is a neighborhood / utility-adjacent path, the walk is generally quiet and safe.

  • Bench seating is available along the path for pauses, relaxing, or people-watching.

  • Best visits are during mornings, golden hour, or off-peak times to enjoy more solitude and better light.

  • Clear days reward you with distant city views over rooftops; foggy or moody skies add character too.

Why Visit Sunset Reservoir?

  • It’s an easy, low-effort walk — perfect when you have just 15–30 minutes.

  • The walk offers urban serenity — you’re surrounded by homes, city streets, and yet tucked away.

  • Elevated paths give views of the city skyline and neighborhood spreads.

  • Unique feature: you’re walking over a solar-powered reservoir roof — modern infrastructure meets everyday city life.

  • Good for dog-walkers, casual walkers, or those who want a quick local dose of fresh air and mild elevation.
