Hike to Krimml Waterfalls

The Krimml Waterfalls are situated in the Hohe Tauern National Park in the Salzburg region of Austria. At 380m high, they are the highest waterfalls not just of Austria, but in all of Europe.

In the village of Krimml, near base of the waterfall you'll find a number of parking areas and the Wasserwelten Krimml visitor centre which includes an education centre, interactive exhibitions, a restaurant and play areas for children, as well as access to the waterfalls.

Exploring the waterfalls

From the base of the waterfalls, there is a 4km hiking trail that leads from the lowest fall all the way to the upper most falls. 

According to the website the first section of this route to the lower viewing point is disabled accessible.

As you approach the waterfalls, you can already feel the sheer power of the water crashing down on the rocks at the bottom.

The whole trail is well-kept, suitable for families and has many viewing points of the waterfalls along the way. 

Just under the middle fall is a guesthouse where we stopped for lunch. My mother-in-law had a bad knee, so she stayed here after lunch while the rest of us continued for the last few hundred meters to the top falls.

Whilst the trail is not steep or challenging for anyone who is young or fit, for the elderly, injured or parents with young children, I would definitely recommend giving yourself a whole day if you want to complete the trail without any time pressures. Take you time, bring plenty of water, and enjoy all the view points on the way up and down.
