Even in the dense mist, this was a beautiful hike through tall trees with nice color in early fall. The rocks and dampness added to the magical feel of the place.
This is a one mile loop trail with the trailhead right outside the lodge at Queen Wilhelmina State Park in the Ouachita National Forest. It is an easy walk with many places to stop and a mostly, level path. If you begin on the north side of the lodge by the sign, you will end up taking a steep, rocky path back through a nice hardwood forest to finish the loop by the south side. I recommend doing the path in reverse and beginning on the south side. This way, you begin the trail with a down hill walk. Although the path is rockier, taking it down hill is less strenuous.
Alternatively, you can begin at the sign and turn around at the overlook to return the way you came. We were not able to see the view due to the fog. I assume many were deterred from taking the trail due to the weather, so we did not pass anyone on the path the entire 30 minutes or so that we were on the path. It is often foggy in this location, particularly early in the day. Don't miss the opportunity to see this forest in its misty splendor.
