The Jane Rau Trail stands as a gateway to the Sonoran Desert's rich ecosystem within Arizona's McDowell Sonoran Preserve. This accessible 0.5-mile loop serves as an interpretive nature trail, honoring Jane Rau, a dedicated conservationist who played a pivotal role in preserving these lands. Whether you’re hiking, biking, or exploring on horseback, this scenic park offers breathtaking desert landscapes, well-maintained trails, and a peaceful escape into nature.

The trail's gentle grade and compact decomposed granite surface make it universally accessible, ideal for visitors of all abilities. Strategically placed interpretive signs guide visitors through the desert's distinct features, from the towering saguaros to the diverse array of desert-adapted plants like barrel cacti, chollas, and palo verde trees.

What sets this trail apart is its role as an educational corridor. The path weaves through prime examples of desert microhabitats, offering glimpses of native wildlife including Gambel's quail, desert cottontails, and various lizard species. During spring, the desert comes alive with wildflowers, painting the landscape in vibrant yellows, purples, and oranges.

Located at the Brown's Ranch Trailhead, the Jane Rau Trail benefits from excellent family-friendly facilities including:

  • Ample parking
  • Modern restrooms
  • Drinking water stations
  • Covered ramadas
  • Knowledgeable volunteer stewards at the information desk

The trail's proximity to the trailhead makes it perfect for families seeking a meaningful introduction to desert ecology, photographers capturing the golden hour light on the McDowell Mountains, or visitors wanting a contemplative desert experience. Best visited during early morning or late afternoon hours, especially during summer months.

Note: The preserve is open from sunrise to sunset. Dogs are welcome but must remain leashed, and visitors should bring adequate water regardless of season.

We had an unforgettable time here soaking in the views, spotting local wildlife, and enjoying quality family time outdoors. If you’re looking for a relaxing yet immersive experience in the heart of the desert, Jane Rau Trail is a must-visit!
