Traverse the Sonoran Desert to an abandoned mine.
The Victoria Mine Trail is a gentle traverse of the Sonoran Desert landscape. Any time of year, but especially in summer, be sure to bring plentiful water and sun protection, as there is no shade or respite on this route.
Start at the southern end of Twin Peaks Campground, where there is trailhead parking for a handful of cars. Sign the trail register and start to make your way across the desert.
The trail rambles up and down small hills and across washes. The landscape of saguaro, organ pipe and cholla cactus is otherworldly.
A trail junction at 1.5 miles is well signed, directing hikers left to continue the .5 miles to the mine remnants. Turn around and return the way you came.
Warning: Organ Pipe National Monument is used daily by human and drug smugglers. Signs along the trail will warn you of this. Smugglers in general want nothing to do with you, and the Border Patrol presence is heavy in this park. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.
