We recently hiked the Calloway Trail at Picacho Peak State Park, and while it’s not as challenging as the Hunter Trail, it’s still a bit difficult, especially with rocky terrain. However, this trail was more manageable for our family, and all of our kids were able to complete it without needing to use the hiking backpack, which was a huge win!
The trail itself is rocky, and it’s easy to slip, so we highly recommend wearing proper footwear to prevent any injuries. It’s not as steep as the Hunter Trail, but it still requires some attention to footing, especially in the more uneven sections. The views on this trail, while beautiful, don’t quite compare to the sweeping vistas from Hunter Trail. However, you’ll be treated to lovely scenery throughout the hike, making it enjoyable from start to finish.
The Calloway Trail is about the same distance as the Hunter Trail, but unlike Hunter Trail, you’re not continuously hiking uphill. This makes the hike a bit easier, and we saw people of all ages taking on the trail, which was great to see. At the end of the trail, there’s a bench where you can sit, relax, and enjoy the view for a few minutes before heading back to the parking lot. It’s a perfect spot to catch your breath and soak in the surroundings.
PARKING
Parking is generally easy to find if you go during the week, but I can imagine that weekends might get crowded, so it’s something to keep in mind if you’re planning your visit then.
TAKEAWAY
The Calloway Trail is connected to other trails in the area, but don’t worry, all the trails are well-marked, so navigation is easy. Overall, it’s a great hike for families, beginner hikers, or anyone looking for a moderate challenge with great views. Just be sure to wear sturdy shoes, bring water, and take your time enjoying the scenery along the way!

A challenging hike, but we managed to complete it as a family! Our three kids ages 10, 7, and 2 crushed it. The views along the way are absolutely stunning. Highly recommend if you’re up for an adventure!
