Hike to a mountain peak for panoramic views of Fitz Roy, Lago Viedma, and the Argentinian desert.
Start this hike from the ranger station in El Chalten. Over the first 3 miles of the hike, you will gradually ascend 1000 feet. The terrain is mostly fields. After about 2 hours of walking, you will reach a field with cows in it. You will reach a fork. Follow the path on the right towards the mirador (viewpoint). Now the trail will get steeper, and you will ascend 1200 more feet in 2 miles. At first the path will take you through the forest, and eventually you will break above the tree line onto rocky terrain to reach the viewpoint. From the view point, there is a more challenging trail (about 1 mile each way) to reach the peak of the mountain. You can reach the summit by following a series of switchbacks to the top. This part of the trail is quite a steep ascent. Particular caution should be used during the descent, or if attempting this in bad weather conditions.
