Eklutna Lake is about an hour drive NE from Anchorage.
This beautiful lake is fed by Eklutna Glacier.
There is so much to do here:
- Rent bikes or kayaks (bring your own too). Info about renting is here.
- Walk or bike along the trail that wraps around the lake
- Hike Twin Peaks Trail
- If you want a more difficult hike, do Pepper Peak. This hike incorporates Twin Peaks, but takes you farther and actually up the twin peaks that the other trail is named after. They are both gorgeous hikes that are mostly uphill the entire way with little shade covering.
- Relax around the lake. There is plenty of space here, walk along the lake and head to a more secluded area, or closer to the parking lot there is a beach area with more people.
- There is also a campground here
- People ride ATVs here as well
Things to keep in mind:
- It is dog friendly and there is a bathroom right by the parking lot.
- Not the best cell service in this area FYI, so plan accordingly.
- Bring $5 (exact change) for the parking fee unless you have an annual pass. The parking lots do fill up, so get there early if you are going during a peak time.
Directions: Take the Glenn Highway to the Eklutna Turn-off.Then take Eklutna Lake road to the end. Note: this is about 10 miles of road that is very windy. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife. We saw a few porcupines once.
