Moss Rock is the best outdoor bouldering in the immediate Birmingham area. There is a broad range of skill level opportunities mostly ranging between V4 and V8, but there are a few V1-3's and a couple V10+ climbs.
Moss Rock has abundant parking, and easy access to all climbing areas. There is no fee for use or facilities, however there are several small local restaurants and often times a food truck within walking distance of the parking lot.
There are two major bouldering areas as well as hiking trails and a large waterfall and creek area.

The rock at Moss Rock is a wavy mix of Shades Sandstone and Mudstone which produces a great bouldering surface, with excellent grip, and isn't too bad on your hands.
Multiple sections of the moss and graffiti covered rocks are considered by most to be high ball problems, but even though there is one bolted wall, in my opinion is not worth the effort of roping up for a 40 foot 5.10 with so many sub 25 foot problems to send.

Leave a ReviewGreat Spot For All Skill Types
I have gone several times and always have a blast. They have rocks for all different skills, I have gone with guys who consistently climb v8’s and with groups who have never been bouldering in their life and Moss Rock Preserve has always had what was needed to have a great time.

Favorite Outdoor Rocks In Birmingham
Moss Rock is easily accessible and a terrific spot for a relaxing climb. The area and boulders are maintained and there is plenty of room to spread out. The scenery, creek, and waterfall add to the experience. I typically go after class and stay until dusk. Moss Rock is quite impressive considering how close it is to a large city such as Birmingham.
