Classic compact hiking and biking trail in central Alabama.
Just 15 miles and 20 minutes north of central Alabama’s capital city, Montgomery. You will usually meet someone, but rarely find Swayback Bridge area crowded. It is a classic compact hiking and biking trail in central Alabama.
Designed as a single track biking trail system bikers and hikers mingle freely. It has four loops of progressively difficult terrain totaling about 12 miles. The shortest is 1 mile and the longest is 7 miles. There is a nice multi car parking lot. The first quarter mile is often muddy; however, after passing that area it is well maintained.
The entrance area is littered with small painted rocks that previous visitors have left.
Compact with other sections of the trail almost always visible, it is a forested area on the banks of the popular Jordan Lake. During early spring, wild azaleas paint the trail. It does contain sections of steep climbs and descents.
A great bonus section is the old US Hwy. 231 blocked off leading down to the now closed Swayback Bridge. It is about ¾-mile downhill ride or walk to the unique old bridge. Pretty cool.
The trailhead is Swayback Bridge Trail Jordan Dam Rd Wetumpka, AL 36092 and the coordinates are 32.624352, -86.240448. It is easy to find.
