Climbing Sand Rock
Alabama › Cherokee Rock Village
Added by Rob Giersch
- Killer climbing in the middle of nowhere Alabama!
- Bouldering, sport, trad, it has it all from beginner to elite
- A literal maze of free standing pinnacles with climbs around every corner
Sand Rock is a unique set of rock outcropping that erupts from Shinbone Ridge overlooking scenic Lake Weiss. The climbable rock runs for about a quarter of a mile along the ridge and is a maze of trails, small caves and literally wall-to-wall climbing.
You can find just about any climb to satisfy your vertical appetite whether it be jug, crimp, or crack, and be assured there is technical diversity for the most demanding seeker of 5.13.
What I love most about Sand Rock is its variety and the amount of climbs compacted into this bizarre playground of stone:
- unlimited bouldering scattered about
- 140+ routes with over half bolted for sport climbing
- plenty of traditional routes for the climber wanting to push their skills.
Talk about easy, you can literally start climbing 100 feet from parking the car, and facilities continue to improve since becoming The Cherokee Rock Village County Park. While not close to the bigger chains of climbing areas found in Tennessee, Sand Rock is worth spending at least a day exploring the many challenges to be found.
Depending on your desired style of climbing bring:
- Crash pad
- Climbing shoes
- Chalk bag
Sport Climbing add
- Dynamic rope
- Belay device
- Rack of runners
Trad Climbing add
- Set of cams or preferred protection

Great Sport Climbing
One of the best places for sport climbing in Alabama. Can get pretty popular on good weather weekends. Routes are really diverse. Bathrooms, showers, running water, etc. are available at the campground. Overall a pretty good place to climb/camp.
