Description

Added by Emily Schrick

Just off U.S. Highway 93 in southern Nevada, Pahranagat National Wildlife Refuge is an oasis in the desert - a place where wide-open skies meet glassy lakes and marshes alive with birds and other wildlife.

This peaceful refuge offers hikers, birdwatchers, and nature lovers a chance to slow down and soak in the quiet beauty of freshwater wetlands surrounded by stark desert hills.

Adventure Type: Walking trails, wildlife viewing, scenic exploration. Surface: Packed dirt paths and boardwalks. Difficulty: Easy, family-friendly routes. Best Time to Visit: Spring and fall (for migrations and cooler months).

At Pahranagat, a series of gentle walking paths and observation points guide you around a cluster of spring-fed lakes and marshes that sustain migratory waterfowl and resident birds year-round. Be sure to stop by the visitor center first for information! There is a nature trail and access to the upper lake from the visitor center.

You can also access the upper and lower lakes from the highway, but be aware that the turns can come up quickly and are easily missed.

Birdwatchers may spot everything from ducks and herons to songbirds stopping over during seasonal migrations. Quiet observation blinds and viewing platforms make it easy to take in sightings without disturbing the wildlife.

Hours of Use: Open daily, sunrise to sunset.
Parking and Facilities: Free parking is available near trailheads and boardwalks; the visitor center offers restrooms and interpretive exhibits.
Permits & Fees: No entry fee.
Are Dogs Allowed: Yes, dogs on leash are welcome on designated trails.

    What to Bring:
    - Binoculars for bird and wildlife viewing
    - Water and sun protection
    - Comfortable walking shoes
    - A camera for capturing views and wildlife

While visiting, please follow the Dirt Road Code.
