Description

Added by Emily Schrick

Located halfway between Las Vegas and Ely in eastern Nevada, the Mount Irish Archaeological Site offers a compelling blend of high desert scenery and fascinating human history.

Set against rugged hills and open sagebrush plains, this area invites visitors to explore ancient stone structures, walk scenic trails, and take in wide-open views that evoke centuries of desert life.

Adventure Type: Scenic walking and historical exploration. Surface: Packed dirt paths and primitive trails. Difficulty: Easy, family-friendly terrain. Best Time to Visit: Spring and fall for milder temperatures.

The heart of the experience here is discovery. A network of simple routes leads you past remnants of ancient dwellings and rock alignments built long ago by indigenous peoples. Interpretive signs help bring the story of the land to life as you wander among low rock walls and stone features that have stood for generations.

Because the trails aren’t heavily developed, the pace here is unhurried- perfect for curious hikers, history lovers, and families who want to stretch their legs while soaking up Nevada’s skies and quiet terrain. Wildflowers dot the landscape in spring, and wildlife like lizards and raptors often make an appearance along the way. The campground has free camping, as well as picnic tables, fire pits, and a pit toilet.

Hours of Use: Open daily, sunrise to sunset.
Parking and Facilities: Parking is available near the trailhead, but be aware that the highway turn-off is abrupt to a wood/wire gate. Must exit car to open & close. The road is fine for most vehicles. Facilities are limited, so plan to bring water and other essentials.
Permits & Fees: Free access - no permits or entrance fees required.
Are Dogs Allowed: Yes, on a leash.

    What to Bring:
    - Water and sun protection
    - Sturdy shoes for uneven ground
    - A hat and layers for changing weather
    - A camera for scenic views

While visiting, please follow the Dirt Road Code.
