If you’re looking for a short but adventurous family hike, the Children’s Cave Trail at Picacho Peak State Park is a perfect pick! The trail is short just under half a mile round trip but don’t let the distance fool you. The terrain is a bit uphill and can be challenging in spots, yet even our 2-year-old was able to complete it with a little assistance. It’s a great way to introduce little ones to hiking, giving them just the right mix of fun and challenge.

Along the way, you’ll be surrounded by beautiful Sonoran Desert scenery with towering saguaros and vibrant desert plants. The views from the trail are amazing, and once you reach the “cave” more like a cozy rock alcove. the kids will feel like they’ve reached a secret hideout.

Right at the trailhead, you’ll find a picnic table (perfect for pre- or post-hike snacks), a playground for the kids to burn off extra energy, and clean bathrooms. It’s an easy spot to spend a couple of hours outdoors, with everything you need for a smooth family adventure.

Trail Details:

• Difficulty: Easy to moderate (due to incline and rocky terrain)

• Trail Type: Out-and-back

• Time: 20–30 minutes

Why We Love It:

This hike is the perfect blend of short, scenic, and challenging enough for kids to feel proud of themselves. The views are incredible, and having a playground, picnic area, and bathrooms right at the trailhead makes it super family-friendly. It’s a great stop if you’re traveling between Phoenix and Tucson or just looking for a fun outdoor family adventure.

Best Time to Go:

Fall through spring is ideal: mornings and late afternoons offer cooler temps and gorgeous lighting.

Pro Tips:

• Bring plenty of water, hats, and sunscreen — the Arizona sun is no joke, even on a short trail.

• Watch for lizards, birds, and desert wildflowers.

• Take a break at the picnic table before or after your hike and let the kids enjoy the playground.

• The rocky sections are manageable but wear good shoes.

Getting There:

Picacho Peak State Park is located off I-10 between Phoenix and Tucson. Enter through the main gate and follow signs to the Sunset Vista parking area. The trailhead is well-marked and located right by the playground and picnic area.

Kid-Friendly:

Definitely! Even toddlers can tackle it with a little help.

Dog-Friendly:

Yes, leashed dogs are welcome. Just be mindful of hot ground and cacti.

Nearby Adventures:

• Sunset Vista Trail (longer, more challenging trail with stunning views)

• Hunter Trail (for older kids or adults up for a bigger challenge)

• Picacho Peak Visitor Center — great for learning more about the area.
