Big Dune
Amargosa Valley, Nevada
Description
Added by Emily Schrick
Rising unexpectedly from the flat desert floor, Big Dune is one of southern Nevada’s most unique and high-energy landscapes. Located in the Amargosa Valley, this massive sand dune spans several square miles and offers a true desert adventure - whether you’re exploring on foot, riding off-road vehicles, or simply taking in the vast, otherworldly scenery.
Adventure Type: Open exploration (no designated trails - managed by the BLM) Surface: Deep sand dunes Difficulty: Moderate to strenuous, depending on activity and conditions Best Time to Visit: Fall through spring; cooler months offer the safest and most enjoyable conditions
Big Dune is an open playground of shifting sand, rolling hills, and steep dune faces that invite exploration in every direction. Hikers can challenge themselves by climbing to the top for sweeping desert views, while OHV and dirt bike riders come for the wide-open space and freedom to roam. With no marked routes, every visit can be a little different. The entire loop around Big Dune is passable in a passenger vehicle. The dirt road is well-maintained.
Despite its remote feel, Big Dune is a popular destination for desert recreation and dispersed camping. Sunsets here are especially memorable, with golden light washing over the dunes and uninterrupted views stretching to the horizon. At night, the lack of light pollution makes for excellent stargazing.
Hours of Use:
- Open daily: sunrise to sunset
- Dispersed camping is allowed in designated areas. There’s dry camping with no facilities past the BLM signed areas closer to the dune, and in the surrounding area.
- If you enter from the north (Big Dunes Road) - there’s a power station there, and there are “no trespassing” and “visitors must check in” signs, but you just keep driving toward the dune - just don’t enter the property.
Parking and Facilities: Informal parking is available near access points. No restrooms, water, or services - come prepared.
Permits & Fees: No permits or entrance fees required.
Are Dogs Allowed: Yes - dogs are allowed, but should be kept under control due to heat and vehicle traffic.
What to Bring:
- Plenty of water (more than you think you’ll need)
- Sun protection and protective clothing
- Navigation tools or GPS
- Emergency supplies and a first-aid kit
- Sand-friendly footwear
While visiting, please follow the Dirt Road Code.
