My family tree can be traced through the Land Between the Lakes and the Shawnee National Forest regions of West Kentucky and Southern Illinois. I have been obsessed with traveling the Nation's National and State Parks my entire life.
Make sure to check the park website on updates to permits and guided bikes within this section of the park. Since Covid 19 in 2020, this has been closed to entry.

People come from all over the country to backpack to this and other off road trails near Ouray/Telluride. Yankee Boy was one of the biggest highlights of my trip with the views and wildflowers.

The wildflowers, streams, mountain views, and mine ruins make for some dramatic photography. I didn't hike here, we drove our jeep up to the basin. 4WD with high clearance is needed to reach this by vehicle.

Closest you can sleep next to the ice lakes trail head. It can get dusty from all of the side by sides and jeeps coming through the campground all day. Has become very popular since Ice Lakes became a instagram hit.

Be in decent shape before attempting. Also, you will meet vehicles coming off of Black Bear Pass. Be aware they do not have much shoulder of the road to share with hikers.

Enjoy unreal views on this tough off road adventure. Make sure your rig can handle the potholes, boulders, and sharp dropoffs.

This national park may be new, but it is mighty. The paved drive for several miles takes you to several trails and overlooks. It is easy and provides amazing views of Black Canyon of the Gunnison.

This is a great off road road over a very scenic pass. Most places along the road is wide enough fro traffic both ways, however there is a stretch of about a mile below the summit that is very narrow, loose, and limited in two way traffic. Up hill has the right of way. Slow down and enjoy the views.

When you seek unreal beauty with challenging 4wd experiences, most people will have Black Bear Pass' road on the list. Be warned, this road is difficult and is a one way road from the summit into Telluride. Do not attempt in anything stock 4wd or awd, this vehicle will not make it otherwise.

Easy short hike to a amazing double arch. And its massive. Look along the trail and see many other arches in the nearby cliffs.

This is a awesome quick hike in which you could grab some awesome photographs. Examples include catching the window arches through the turret arch. Pan a photo to catch the two windows and the turret arch together. Etc.

This is a nice bathroom break and stop on the way to the Needles District of Canyonlands. No one knows the stories being described on this wall, but it is one of the best examples of petroglyphs I have ever seen.

This is a easy hike that you can either hike out and back or have someone pick you up at the other end. The "avenue" needs to be experienced in person to be able to understand just how big it really is.

No one really knows what this oddity is. One thing is for sure. Views here are awesome. Worth the short hike from the parking lot. There is also a small picnic area here and some rustic bathrooms.

Being late summer and at sunrise, this was almost a ghost town when we arrived. What followed was a rare chance to fully capture this landscape without interruption. It also allowed for some real quiet time and solitude.

I hiked this at sunset on a Sunday night and the crowds seemed to be much smaller than advertised. It also was 102 degrees the day I hiked, but once the sun started to set it was manageable. Carry enough water and wear performance wear and you should be OK. Its a bucketlist experience for a reason.

Look hard for pictures of the southwest and Mesa Arch will come up. The view through this oddity of nature is memorizing. Hold on to the kids though as this is a long drop to the canyon floor below. Easy half mile lop to and from the parking lot.

An amazing slot canyon similar to the Narrows but involves a powerful waterfall crashing from the mountains above. You can take an easy fairly level path into the canyon, or take a short strenuous hike to the high bridge that crosses hundreds of feet above.

the hot springs are open once more.

This look out for photography is what most people think of when they think of Glacier National Park. Fairy easy to get to but can be crowded with tripods.

Zebras in California? Hearst has a private zoo, now a herd of Zebras roam the grounds. They’re quite photogenic from the PCH.

This is a great trail for some exercise, but it is sometimes overgrown and tick/mosquitoes are thick.

St Andrews State Park is a great retreat compared to busy PCB. Camping there along the bay made for some solitude and great fishing. The brackish ponds and pristine dunes made for easy wildlife viewing.

This place is too crowded. It is a beautiful spot and operated by the NPS. Come in the late fall and early spring before it is taken up by everyone during the summer.
